Darnell Nurse Set for First Game Against Oilers Since Sharks Trade

SAN JOSE — Darnell Nurse will see familiar colors across the ice Saturday, but the Sharks defenseman has already drawn the line between former teammates and the job ahead. San Jose hosts Edmonton at 4 p.m. ET, with Nurse set to face the Oilers for the first time since his July 1 trade.

  • Nurse has one goal through four games with San Jose, which enters Saturday at 3-1-0.
  • His first Sharks goal ended Thursday’s game in St. Louis, scored 1:03 into overtime for a 3-2 win over the Blues.
  • Edmonton arrives with a 3-0-1 record.
  • Nurse spent his first 12 NHL seasons with the Oilers after they selected him seventh overall in the 2013 NHL Draft.
  • The July trade sent Nurse to San Jose, while Edmonton received defenseman Shakir Mukhamadullin and forward prospect Zachary Sharp.
  • With Edmonton, Nurse posted 88 goals and 236 assists in 798 regular-season games. He added seven goals and 22 assists across 100 playoff appearances.
  • He was part of Edmonton clubs that reached the Stanley Cup Final in both 2024 and 2025.
  • No Sharks injuries, scratches or goaltending changes were listed.

What it means for the Oilers game

Nurse expects the matchup to feel different after more than a decade in Edmonton, but he said his focus is on the Sharks crest and the result. He called the Oilers one of the division’s top teams and welcomed the chance to measure San Jose against a roster loaded with elite players.

Friday still left room for the personal side. Nurse planned to meet his former teammates for dinner while both clubs were in San Jose. Once the puck drops, though, the friendships take a back seat.

“It’s going to be weird,” Nurse said, noting that his years in Edmonton taught him to concentrate on what he can control. He said playing against players he practiced with for so long will be a new experience, but one he is eager to take on.

Sharks coach Ryan Warsofsky said Nurse has made an immediate mark in the room and on the blue line. Warsofsky praised his conditioning, edge, leadership and understanding of what winning requires at the NHL level, calling him a strong addition for the organization and his family.

Saturday’s game is scheduled for 4 p.m. ET from San Jose, with NBCSCA, SNW and SN1 carrying the broadcast.
