De Roon Set for Roma’s Real Madrid Test at the Olimpico

Marten De Roon has quickly become a reference point in Roma’s midfield, and Wednesday is set to bring his next major examination. The Dutchman is expected to start alongside Manu Koné as Roma prepare to face Real Madrid at the Olimpico, a club he has never beaten in the Champions League.

The decision

De Roon arrived from Atalanta late in the transfer window, a move that initially brought some doubts among Roma supporters. Gian Piero Gasperini, however, was convinced from the beginning. The 35-year-old has responded in the manner expected of a player familiar with the coach’s demands: by working, waiting for his moment and giving the side stability when called upon.

His first Roma start, against Como, offered a clear indication of why Gasperini wanted him. De Roon covered 11.657 kilometres, more than any other player on the pitch. He attempted five tackles and won three, won six of his 11 duels, made six defensive interventions and reached 27.627 km/h in his fastest sprint. For a player in his mid-thirties, it was also a strong statement about his physical condition.

The numbers did not capture everything. De Roon maintained composure through Roma’s stronger spells and the more tense moments of the match, while his positioning and anticipation helped Koné grow into the game beside him. After the final whistle, he was also among the first to comfort Malen, a gesture that Gasperini felt reflected the character of a captain within the group.

That is De Roon’s value in a team built around intensity and responsibility. He does not need the defining touch or the conspicuous pass to influence a contest. His work is often in the earlier decision: closing a route, occupying the useful space, slowing a move down or increasing the tempo at the right moment. Such choices have long made him one of Gasperini’s most trusted interpreters on the pitch.

Wednesday will carry added weight. De Roon has made 44 Champions League appearances for Roma, second only to Paulo Dybala’s 54, yet Real Madrid have remained an unbeaten obstacle for him. A meeting at the Olimpico offers the chance to change that record and further establish himself in a Roma side where he has settled rapidly.

For now, the immediate task is recovery. Roma must reset after Como, and De Roon’s role looks likely to be central again when the next European night arrives.
