Marseille’s thin defensive options may have suffered an early international-break blow after Canada centre-back Derek Cornelius was taken to hospital following a non-contact injury in Toronto.
Canada Soccer confirmed on Wednesday that Cornelius had sustained a lower-body problem during training with the national team. The 28-year-old was transported to a local hospital for treatment and further examinations, with no timetable yet given for his recovery.
“Derek Cornelius suffered a non-contact lower-body injury in training today in Toronto,” Canada said. “He was taken to a local hospital, where he is receiving medical care and undergoing further assessment. Our medical staff are focused on supporting Derek and his full recovery, and further updates will be provided when appropriate.”
Marseille await the extent of the setback
The news arrives during an unusually long international window and could further test Marseille’s limited squad depth. The club have operated under tighter financial conditions since owner Frank McCourt approved a significant cost-cutting plan over the summer.
Cornelius is not among Bruno Genesio’s first-choice defenders, but he has already been used four times across all competitions this season. His total of 93 minutes includes three Ligue 1 appearances and one Europa League outing.
He started Marseille’s European match against Besiktas before being replaced in the 67th minute. In the league, he came off the bench for seven minutes against Strasbourg, 17 minutes against Paris FC and two minutes against Rennes.
A possible loss of cover at centre-back
The Canada international appeared set to provide cover in central defence behind Nayef Aguerd, CJ Egan-Riley and Geoffrey Kondogbia. The severity of his injury will determine whether Marseille lose an experienced alternative at a demanding point in the season.
Cornelius joined Marseille from Malmö in the summer of 2024. He spent last season on loan at Rangers, where he made 14 appearances, scoring once and registering one assist.
He has won 48 caps for Canada and scored one international goal. For now, Marseille must wait for medical clarity after an injury that has abruptly interrupted his national-team duty.
