Derek Cornelius’ international break has taken an alarming turn in Toronto, with the Marseille defender suffering a lower-body injury during Canada training on Wednesday.
The 28-year-old was hurt without contact during the session and was taken to a local hospital for treatment and further examinations. Canada confirmed that Cornelius had left training after sustaining the injury.
Tests under way after Toronto training injury
Cornelius had joined Jesse Marsch’s Canada squad for a three-match friendly programme, but the extent of the problem and his availability for the fixtures have not yet been established.
Canada are due to face Chile in the early hours of Sunday, followed by Peru on 3 October and the United States on 7 October.

Limited Marseille involvement
The centre-back returned to Marseille this season after a loan spell with Rangers, but has been used sparingly by the Ligue 1 side.
His total playing time stands at 26 minutes in Ligue 1 and 67 minutes in the Europa League since the start of the campaign.
Cornelius was nevertheless a regular starter for Canada through most of the 2026 World Cup, and Marsch selected him again for the current international window. Marseille will now await the results of the hospital checks before assessing the defender’s immediate prospects.
