The final whistle at the Meinau did not bring closure for Liam Rosenior. Paris FC had left Strasbourg with a 2-1 victory, but the English coach’s first return to his former club ended in a confrontation with home supporters and a sharp public rebuke from Dimitri Liénard.
Rosenior had managed Strasbourg from the winter of 2024 before departing for Chelsea in January 2026. Back in Alsace at the head of Paris FC only months later, he oversaw a win against the club he had previously coached. Yet the match became increasingly tense during the second half, when Strasbourg fans directed insults at him for several minutes.
The Paris FC manager eventually answered the crowd, and the exchanges spilled into a scuffle after the final whistle. Liénard, Strasbourg’s former captain and now a pundit, said abuse involving a person’s family was unacceptable, but he also questioned Rosenior’s decision to engage with the stands.
“I do not support insults aimed at family members,” Liénard said. “But if coaches start doing that, going over in front of the stands…”
Liénard recalls a difficult Strasbourg exit
The former midfielder, now 38, argued that Rosenior should not have expected a celebratory reception following the way his Strasbourg spell had ended. He pointed to the coach’s closing league run, saying Racing had lost three and drawn two of their last five matches, aside from their European fixtures.
Strasbourg’s last victory under Rosenior came against Lille at the Meinau on 9 November 2025, Liénard noted. He also criticised the coach’s post-match comments when he left the club, believing Rosenior had failed to thank Strasbourg supporters.
“Did he think we were going to build him a statue, roll out the red carpet or open champagne?” Liénard said. “He must be crazy. I think he had forgotten the club’s values.”
The tension was further fuelled by Mamadou Sarr’s return to Chelsea from his loan spell soon after Rosenior’s departure. Liénard described the defender as a key figure in Strasbourg’s side and took issue with remarks in which Rosenior had spoken of the Champions League and suggested supporters should be proud if he won the competition.
“You leave for Chelsea in the middle of the season, take away a defender who was our rock, then come back to lecture us?” Liénard said. “It is unbelievable. Honestly, I was very disappointed.”
