Ebnoutalib Fires Eintracht Frankfurt Past Köln in Bundesliga Clash

Younes Ebnoutalib settled Eintracht Frankfurt’s 1-0 Bundesliga win over Köln with a 77th-minute finish at Deutsche Bank Park. Noël Aséko supplied the decisive pass after a match in which both sides created enough to break the deadlock earlier.

Key takeaways

  • Ebnoutalib scored from the right side of the box to decide Matchday 6 on Friday, 16 October 2026.
  • Aséko made an immediate contribution after replacing Mario Götze, setting up the only goal.
  • Frankfurt created sustained second-half pressure, including several corners and close-range attempts by Farès Chaïbi and Lilian Brassier.
  • Köln threatened through Marius Bülter, Saïd El Mala and Sebastian Sebulonsen but could not find an equaliser.
  • Nnamdi Collins and Köln defender Joël Schmied were forced off through injury.

Frankfurt find the opening

The first half ended goalless despite early openings at both ends. Marius Bülter tested Frankfurt in the first minute, while Ebnoutalib was denied after being played in by Ritsu Doan soon afterwards.

Farès Chaïbi was busy for Frankfurt. He had efforts saved in the ninth and 22nd minutes, then dragged another attempt wide from the right side of the area. Köln carried danger through Bülter and El Mala: Bülter forced a save from Borna Sosa’s cross on 32 minutes, Sebulonsen sent an effort narrowly over three minutes later, and El Mala struck wide after a late counterattack.

Frankfurt increased the pressure after the break. Ebnoutalib missed with a close-range header and then fired wide after Jonathan Burkardt’s pass. Brassier headed a Doan delivery on target, Chaïbi later headed another Doan cross at goal, and Burkardt had a long-range shot blocked.

The breakthrough arrived after 77 minutes. Aséko, on for Götze six minutes earlier, found Ebnoutalib in the area. The forward drove a right-footed shot inside the right post.

Chaïbi had a further chance to extend the lead from Ansgar Knauff’s pass in the 87th minute, while Doan saw a stoppage-time shot blocked after Aséko again provided the ball.

Köln changes and late pressure

Köln made a triple change on 68 minutes. Alessio Castro-Montes replaced the injured Schmied, while Mikey Moore and Paul Okon-Engstler came on for Linton Maina and Ísak Jóhannesson. Luca Waldschmidt and Reigan Heskey followed in the 84th minute, replacing Sebulonsen and El Mala.

Frankfurt lost Collins to injury after 69 minutes. Knauff entered in his place, with Aséko introduced at the same time. Elias Baum replaced Burkardt late on.

Köln’s strongest late opportunity fell to Bülter, whose 75th-minute effort was stopped after Okon-Engstler’s assist. Heskey then had a shot blocked following a Sosa corner, but Frankfurt saw out four added minutes.

Götze and Brassier were booked for Frankfurt. Jóhannesson and Sosa received Köln yellow cards. Köln defender Luka Lochoshvili also required treatment during the first half but remained involved.
