Dino Toppmöller Opens Up on Shock RC Lens Dismissal

The lights had barely settled on another French football week when Dino Toppmöller was left looking for answers. Removed as Lens coach in mid-September, the German said the decision came as a profound shock and that he is already prepared to return to management.

Key takeaways

  • Dino Toppmöller was dismissed by RC Lens in the middle of September.
  • The German described his departure as an enormous disappointment and said he was stunned by the news.
  • Lens had wanted to part ways with assistant coach Nelson Morgado.
  • Toppmöller chose not to remain in the job without his Portuguese assistant.
  • The former Lens coach says he does not intend to take a sabbatical.

A decision shaped by the coaching staff

Toppmöller said the crucial issue was the future of Morgado, his assistant. Lens considered the Portuguese coach too demanding, too outspoken and involved in disputes with too many people within the club.

The club wanted Morgado to leave while Toppmöller remained in charge. For the head coach, however, accepting that arrangement was not an option. He said it was painful to be faced with a situation in which keeping his assistant would mean losing his own position.

He ultimately felt that preserving his principles mattered more than staying in the Lens dugout, explaining that he preferred to be able to look himself in the mirror rather than continue without Morgado.

Ready for another opportunity

Despite the abrupt end to his Lens spell, Toppmöller gave no indication that he intends to step away from the game for long. He said he has no need for a year out and is ready to take another coaching role as soon as the right opportunity arrives.

It is the second dismissal he has experienced in 2026, having also lost his job at Eintracht Frankfurt earlier in the year. The Lens exit has clearly hurt, but the 45-year-old is not treating it as a reason to pause his career.
