Dominik Greif Shines Despite Lyon’s 2-1 Defeat at Lens

Dominik Greif made the long walk from his goal to Lens’ penalty area in the fifth minute of stoppage time, his two-metre frame joining Lyon’s final corner as they chased a rescue act at Bollaert. It never came. Lens won 2-1 on Friday night, but Lyon’s Slovak goalkeeper was the main reason the contest remained alive until the final whistle.

Lyon arrived with Ligue 1’s strongest defensive record, having conceded only two goals across their opening five matches. Greif has been central to that start, and he again stood apart from a collective display that left Paulo Fonseca’s side under sustained pressure.

Greif keeps Lyon within reach

Lens created enough opportunities to put the game beyond Lyon well before the closing stages. Greif denied Florian Sotoca from close range after 12 minutes, then produced a fingertip save to push Florian Thauvin’s effort away from the top corner shortly before half-time.

He was needed again in first-half stoppage time after Lyon’s defence gifted Odsonne Édouard possession inside the box. The 29-year-old also dealt with another Thauvin attempt in the 66th minute, while his distribution and reading of passes in behind helped Lyon cope with Lens’ attacking waves.

Fonseca made clear where the balance of the match lay.

“He played very well, and it was obvious because the rest of the team did not do what was needed,” the Lyon coach said. “Normally, we are a side that does not give away many chances, but that was not the case here. Dominik had a great match.”

Two moments Greif felt he could have handled better

For all his saves, Greif was not entirely satisfied with his own evening. Lens’ opening goal arrived in the 36th minute when Sotoca turned and struck at the near post, catching the goalkeeper out.

Lens doubled their advantage in the 76th minute through Matthieu Udol’s header. Greif was unable to close down the angle sufficiently, and later suggested there were elements of the performance he wanted to improve.

“I always try to do better,” Greif said. “I try to work as well as I can. It is a shame that the international break interrupted our good run. There are also a few situations that I am not happy with.”

The goalkeeper had returned from three encouraging appearances for Slovakia during the international window and resumed his club form despite Lyon’s defeat.

Young teammate highlights goalkeeper’s importance

Lyon midfielder Khalis Merah praised Greif’s influence after the match, insisting the goalkeeper had prevented the scoreline from becoming more severe.

“It is always good to have a goalkeeper of his stature,” Merah said. “He saved us well and kept us in the game. It is important to have a goalkeeper at that level because good teams always have a great goalkeeper.”

Lyon’s late push brought them back into the contest after Udol’s goal, and Greif was sent forward for the final set-piece as they tried to force a 2-2 draw. An equaliser would have been harsh on Lens after Lyon’s difficult night, but Greif’s performance ensured there was still something to chase.

Fonseca’s side will need their goalkeeper to maintain that level as they look to respond to their first setback after a defensively strong opening to the Ligue 1 season.
