Drew Rasmussen’s No-Hit Bid Powers Rays Past Yankees in ALDS Game 1

Drew Rasmussen kept it to the essentials before the American League Division Series opened at Tropicana Field: preparation, then execution. On Saturday night, the Rays’ right-hander supplied both in full, carrying a no-hit bid into the eighth inning and steering Tampa Bay to a 1-0 Game 1 win over the Yankees in front of a sold-out crowd of 40,542.

Rasmussen sets the tone on the mound

Rasmussen had described Major League pitching as a game built on two pillars, saying that his work comes down to being ready and delivering pitches when the moment arrives. Rays pitching coach Kyle Snyder has called him the club’s standard, and the postseason opener offered a sharp illustration of why.

  • Rasmussen struck out 10 Yankees.
  • He issued two walks.
  • He retired 15 consecutive hitters during the outing.
  • New York did not record a hit until there were two outs in the eighth inning.

Austin Wells ended the no-hit chance by lining a double down the right-field line in the eighth. The Yankees catcher did not remain at second for long. Victor Mesa Jr. delivered the relay to shortstop Taylor Walls, who finished the play at third base to erase Wells.

That sequence preserved the shutout and gave Rasmussen’s outing the feel of a complete Tropicana Field performance: command, clean defense and no room for New York to build an inning.

A one-run win gives Tampa Bay the early edge

The 1-0 decision was the Rays’ first postseason victory since Game 1 of the 2021 ALDS. More immediately, it handed Tampa Bay the opening-game advantage in a best-of-five series.

  • Teams that win Game 1 in a best-of-five postseason matchup have ultimately taken the series 116 times in 160 opportunities, a 73% rate.
  • Under the current 2-2-1 Division Series format, home clubs winning the opener have advanced 42 times in 56 series, or 75%.

Those numbers do not play the next game, but they underscore what Rasmussen and the Rays accomplished in a taut opener. Tampa Bay now carries a 1-0 series lead into Game 2 on Monday.

What comes next

Game 2 of the ALDS is scheduled for Monday at 8 p.m. ET. The game will air on TBS, truTV, UniMas and HBO Max.
