Dybala Extends Roma Stay After Gasperini’s Key Role

Paulo Dybala’s renewed Roma contract has become one of the early markers of the season: a decision shaped by Gian Piero Gasperini’s insistence, the player’s willingness to accept a reduced salary and a club finally prepared to find a workable formula. At 32, Dybala has started every match and helped carry Roma to the top of the table, even without opening his scoring account.

Key takeaways

  • Gasperini made Dybala’s retention a priority after being convinced by his decisive contribution to Roma’s Champions League qualification.
  • Dybala signed a one-year extension with a fixed annual salary of €2.2 million, down from €6.5 million net per season.
  • Performance bonuses could add a further €2 million through starts, goals and assists.
  • Juventus and Napoli both explored the Argentine’s situation during the summer, but he maintained that Roma was his first choice.
  • Roma’s playmaker has featured in every game so far this season and is contributing assists and creative influence as the club lead the standings.

Gasperini turns a promise into a renewal

The agreement did not emerge quickly. Discussions between Dybala’s agent, Carlos Novel, and Roma had been inactive for months after Ricky Massara, then the club’s sporting director, had told the representative that an offer would arrive. With no further progress, Novel began assessing alternatives for his client.

Gasperini’s intervention changed the direction of the talks. After the 2025-26 campaign, a season in which Dybala’s fitness troubles again limited his continuity, the coach had seen enough in the run-in to conclude that Roma could not casually lose a player of his level. Dybala played an important part in securing Champions League football, and Gasperini told him directly that he remained central to the project.

The coach then took the case to the Friedkin ownership. His request was clear: Roma needed to reopen negotiations and retain the Argentine rather than allow the situation to drift towards an exit. The player trusted that commitment, having been assured that Gasperini would push for a deal.

There was still a substantial financial gap to bridge. Dybala’s previous €6.5 million net salary represented a cost of more than €12 million on Roma’s accounts. He had indicated early in the process that he would accept less money, although his initial preference was for a two-year extension until 2028 and a salary no lower than €3 million.

Roma’s opening terms were returned with amendments, while Dybala’s counterproposal was not accepted in full. The compromise was a shorter extension and an incentives-heavy package. The new deal runs for one additional year and includes a fixed €2.2 million, a 72 per cent reduction on his former basic wage.

A contract built around availability and influence

The agreement gives Dybala the opportunity to recover much of the reduction through his contribution on the pitch. He receives €100,000 for every start of at least 45 minutes, up to 20 such appearances. From the 21st qualifying match onwards, the payment rises to €150,000 per start.

There are further rewards for end product. Every block of five goals and assists triggers an additional payment, with the relevant bonuses ranging from €100,000 to €1 million. In total, the variable elements can add up to €2 million.

Dybala accepted the structure because he believes he can meet its demands. His start to the campaign has supported that confidence: he has been available for every fixture, supplying assists and the moments of quality that have helped Roma establish themselves at the summit. His influence has recalled his strongest years at Juventus, despite the physical problems that had previously interrupted his Roma spell.

The decision also carries emotional weight. Dybala left Juventus in 2022 after seven seasons and 11 trophies, departing Turin in tears at the final match of his spell there. He had expected that club to be his long-term home, but Roma became the place where he rebuilt that connection with supporters.

When negotiations in the capital were still uncertain during the summer, Juventus contacted Novel to ask about Dybala’s contractual position and financial expectations. Napoli also made enquiries. Dybala thanked Juventus for the interest but made clear that he intended to stay in Rome; the same answer was given to Napoli.

His stance was tied to the word he had given Gasperini, whose advocacy had been decisive in bringing the negotiation back to life. Roma now have their Argentine creator secured, their coach’s authority reinforced and a leading player whose place in the season’s story appears far from finished.
