Edson Álvarez Emerges as Valencia’s More Realistic Mexican Target

At Mestalla, where Valencia’s rebuilding plans are constrained by a difficult financial picture, Edson Álvarez has emerged as the Mexican player more realistically positioned for a possible move than Cruz Azul midfielder Erik Lira.

Tarek Seniat, StayPro’s European representative, has recently been seen around Valencia. The agency represents both Álvarez and Lira, prompting speculation that the visit might concern Lira’s long-discussed route to European football after the 2026 World Cup.

Yet Lira’s prospective transfer presents a major obstacle. Cruz Azul’s midfielder is valued at around $14 million, a figure that would be hard for Valencia to accommodate while the club continues to operate without the scope for high-cost signings.

Álvarez fits a need in Valencia

Álvarez may offer Valencia a more attainable option for the second half of the 2026-27 campaign. The former América player has returned to the pitch for West Ham, but is still considering where his next opportunity may lie.

Valencia are looking for a central defender, a requirement that could work in Álvarez’s favour given his ability to play in the back line as well as midfield. His versatility has long been one of the defining features of his career, from Mexico City to Amsterdam and east London.

There has been no formal announcement from Valencia, West Ham or the player’s camp, but the club’s need and the presence of StayPro in the discussions have kept the possibility alive.

Other Mexican names around Mestalla

Javier Aguirre’s arrival on the Valencia bench has also placed Héctor Herrera in the conversation. Herrera already knows Spanish football from his successful spell at Atlético de Madrid and, like Álvarez and Lira, is represented by StayPro.

Kevin Álvarez is another StayPro client, although the América full-back is regarded as a more distant possibility than his compatriots. For now, Valencia’s Mexican connections remain exploratory rather than confirmed, with Edson Álvarez appearing to be the most viable of the names under consideration.
