Efton Chism III turned a breakout performance into a 29-26 Patriots victory over the Bills, then declined to extend the postgame exchange with Buffalo safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson.
The former undrafted wide receiver made several pivotal plays for New England, capped by a late one-handed touchdown reception that put the Patriots in front. Gardner-Johnson responded afterward by incorrectly characterizing Chism as a practice-squad call-up and suggesting the rookie would quickly fade from view.
Chism has not been on New England’s practice squad. In his second NFL season, he chose to focus on the Patriots’ upcoming opponent rather than answer Gardner-Johnson’s criticism.
Chism keeps focus on New England
Chism said Gardner-Johnson is an accomplished player and called Buffalo a strong team, adding that he respects the safety. His attention, however, is already on the Raiders.
Head coach Mike Vrabel praised Chism’s preparation and the work that put him in position to deliver against Buffalo. Vrabel said players earning opportunities and helping the club win is exactly what a team needs, describing Chism as a respected worker who takes extensive practice and show-team repetitions.
Vrabel added that no one on the roster covers more ground in the work the Patriots track. The coach’s endorsement reflects Chism’s effort to establish a longer-term offensive role while New England has needed contributions from less-heralded players.
Injury and roster status
- A.J. Brown — sidelined, creating additional opportunities for Chism and other Patriots receivers.
- Efton Chism III — active contributor after his game-changing performance against Buffalo; he has never been a member of New England’s practice squad.
Week ahead: Patriots prepare for Raiders
New England will shift from its upset of Buffalo to its next matchup against the Raiders. Chism said the Patriots are looking forward to that game as he attempts to build on his late touchdown catch and expanded opportunity in the offense.
