Eintracht Frankfurt arrive in Leipzig unbeaten away from home, but their record at RB Leipzig offers little comfort. Adi Hütter’s side have conceded ten goals in four league matches and now face a club on a seven-game home winning run.
Leipzig history and Frankfurt’s defensive task
- On 6 December 2025, Frankfurt suffered their heaviest competitive defeat of the millennium, losing 6-0 in Leipzig.
- Dino Toppmöller left six weeks later.
- Frankfurt then lost the return fixture 3-1 at home. Those two matches were also the club’s most recent Saturday-night headline games.
Frankfurt have won only once in ten visits to Leipzig. Ansgar Knauff scored the only winning goal there, in the 2023/24 season. The other nine trips brought three draws and six defeats, while Frankfurt have never scored more than once in Leipzig.
Leipzig have found the net in each of their last 31 home fixtures. They have also won their past seven at home.
Hütter has identified individual errors as the immediate issue for his new side. Quick goals conceded after half-time against Augsburg, in a 4-1 loss, and Freiburg, in a 2-2 draw, underlined the problem.
“It is not about physical condition. It is individual,” Hütter said. “We did not defend well and we lost concentration. We have to correct that as quickly as possible. Every player is responsible.”
Lessons from the Mainz win
Frankfurt beat Mainz 3-1 despite similarly unpromising pre-match numbers. Hütter wants that display to set the standard in Leipzig.
“The most important thing is to stay close together and compact,” he said. “If we leave too much space, both in width and depth, Leipzig’s players are very dangerous.”
He believes the Mainz performance showed Frankfurt can make the evening difficult for Leipzig. His team must also find ways through any pressure rather than merely absorb it.
“We need moments when we can escape that pressure,” Hütter said. “We believe in our quality.”
System and selection remain open
Hütter used a 3-4-2-1 shape in Mainz and could again opt for a back three that becomes a five without the ball. A 3-5-2 is also possible.
Either setup creates a decision in attack. Ritsu Doan, Can Uzun and Younes Ebnoutalib cannot all necessarily start in the same advanced roles. Hütter has indicated that Doan is viewed further forward, in the central attacking area, rather than as a right wing-back.
The right-sided wing-back competition is between Elias Baum and Knauff, who was injured at the beginning of the season. Knauff’s Leipzig winner and his experience strengthen his case, while Baum has already made the position his own.
“I am pleased that Ansgar is increasing the competition,” Hütter said. “He played a very solid match against Eintracht Braunschweig. Elias naturally does not want to give up that place, and that is important too.”
