Elia Caprile Gains Albanian Citizenship but Italy Future Remains Open

Elia Caprile’s form at Cagliari has made him one of the more persistent questions around Italy’s goalkeeping depth, yet the 2001-born goalkeeper remains without a senior Azzurri appearance. A new development away from the pitch could eventually add another dimension to that situation: Caprile has been granted Albanian citizenship, although a call-up by Albania is not currently straightforward under FIFA eligibility rules.

A citizenship decision with football implications

  1. Caprile has built a strong reputation across recent seasons, particularly during his time with Cagliari, after earlier spells at Napoli and Bari.
  2. Despite those performances, he has not played for Italy’s senior national team. His only Italy appearances came twice for the Under-21 side and once at Under-18 level.
  3. Gennaro Gattuso included him in a senior Italy squad in November 2025, but the goalkeeper did not make his international debut.
  4. In recent weeks, Caprile submitted an application for Albanian citizenship, motivated by personal family circumstances and the nationality of his partner.
  5. The application has now been accepted, meaning the Cagliari player will become an Albanian citizen.

Why an Albania call-up remains uncertain

The Albanian Football Federation is understood to be considering whether it can begin the process of making Caprile available for the national side coached by Rolando Maran. Citizenship alone, however, does not make a player eligible to represent a country in international football.

FIFA regulations also require a player to meet at least one further territorial connection. He must have been born in the country, have a parent or grandparent born there, or have lived there for the required minimum period.

  • Caprile was not born in Albania.
  • He has not lived in the country.
  • He does not have an Albanian parent or grandparent.
  • His partner’s Albanian nationality is not sufficient for football eligibility, including in the event of marriage.

For that reason, an immediate Albania selection is not on the horizon. Still, the citizenship decision places Caprile’s international future back in focus. At Coverciano, Roberto Mancini and his staff may have another reason to consider whether a goalkeeper who has consistently impressed in Serie A deserves an opportunity with Italy before any alternative path can develop.
