Qatar Confirmed to Host 2026 FIFA Intercontinental Cup

Doha and its neighbouring stadium cities will again close the club season’s global circle in December, with Qatar confirmed as host of the 2026 FIFA Intercontinental Cup. The competition brings together continental champions from across the game, including the winners of the UEFA Champions League and Copa Libertadores, and returns to the Gulf for a third successive edition under its revised identity.

Since FIFA reshaped the former Club World Cup in 2024, the Intercontinental Cup has been staged in Qatar and given a route that reserves a direct place in the final for Europe’s champion. Paris Saint-Germain, holders of the UEFA Champions League and reigning Intercontinental Cup winners, are already waiting in that final, scheduled for 16 December.

The road from the other confederations began in August, when Saudi Arabia’s Al-Ahli overcame Auckland FC of New Zealand. Mamelodi Sundowns then travelled the next stage of the route in September, beating Al-Ahli to secure their place in the Challenger Cup.

The South African side will meet the winner of the Derby of the Americas, the tie that pairs Mexican champions Toluca with the eventual Copa Libertadores winners. Toluca reached this point as Concacaf Champions Cup holders, while South America’s representative remains to be decided.

Palmeiras have already booked their place in the Libertadores final. Their opponent will emerge from Thursday’s meeting between Flamengo and Estudiantes, leaving Brazil, Argentina and Mexico still connected to a tournament whose final destination is Qatar.
