At Stamford Bridge, a routine aerial challenge in the closing stages of Chelsea’s match with Everton turned into a long and anxious stoppage as Emiliano Martínez was taken from the pitch on a stretcher after a heavy collision.
A dangerous collision in the 75th minute
The Argentine goalkeeper had come off his line to meet a cross delivered from the left, advancing with his fists raised to clear the ball. After directing the ball away to his right, Martínez collided at speed with Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite.
He fell to the turf immediately, appearing disorientated after the impact, prompting concern among players from both sides.
- The incident occurred in the 75th minute of Chelsea’s Premier League meeting with Everton.
- Martínez had successfully punched the cross clear before making contact with Branthwaite.
- The collision involved a significant blow to the goalkeeper’s head.
- Medical staff treated him on the field for more than ten minutes.
Stretcher departure and initial reassurance
Chelsea’s medical team chose not to allow Martínez to continue. His neck was immobilised as a precaution before he was carried away on a stretcher.
There was, however, an encouraging sign for the London club and Argentina: Martínez was conscious when he left the field and raised a thumb towards the stands. That gesture suggested he was not in immediate serious danger, although his condition remained subject to an official medical update.
