Roma’s search for a sharper attacking option may soon bring Endrick back into view, although the Brazilian will first experience the club from the other side of a Champions League night at a sold-out Olimpico.
The decision
The 19-year-old is expected to begin on the bench as Roma welcome Real Madrid, in the city’s first Champions League occasion for 2,800 days. It will also give him a close look at Gian Piero Gasperini’s work, with the Roma coach having admired the forward for some time.
Roma want greater invention and finishing quality in the wide areas. The idea is to add a player capable of combining with Paulo Dybala behind Donyell Malen, a profile Gasperini has been seeking for the past 16 months.
Endrick was already considered during the summer, but José Mourinho blocked an exit from Real Madrid. Roma sporting director Tony D’Amico is set to make another attempt in January, with a loan including an option to buy the preferred formula.
The obstacle remains Madrid’s position. Mourinho has used the former Palmeiras forward for only four minutes so far, yet has made clear that any interested club will have to persuade him. He has described Endrick as a player he loves, with enormous potential and an important role in his squad.
Milan are also monitoring the situation. Real Madrid committed close to €60 million to sign Endrick two years ago, and any winter discussion will therefore involve both the player’s development and the value attached to one of the club’s youngest attacking assets.
Sunday’s picture
There is no immediate conclusion to draw from one European evening, but Roma’s need is clear. Gasperini’s side are looking for an attacker who can alter matches near goal, while Endrick’s limited minutes in Madrid leave the January window as a situation worth watching.
