Italian football has lost one of the voices that helped give Sunday afternoons their shape. Ennio Vitanza, the long-serving Rai commentator and presenter associated with Domenica Sprint, La Domenica Sportiva and 90º minuto, has died aged 92.
Quick facts
- Ennio Vitanza died at the age of 92.
- He was a familiar Rai voice and face across several landmark football programmes.
- His television work included Domenica Sprint, La Domenica Sportiva and 90º minuto.
- He covered every FIFA World Cup from 1974 through to 1990.
- He also followed the European Championships from 1980 to 1988.
For generations of viewers, Rai’s football coverage was part of the weekly rhythm around Serie A: the waiting for results, the images from stadiums across the country, and the familiar voices putting another round into context. Vitanza was among the broadcasters who accompanied that ritual.
His career extended well beyond the domestic calendar. Between 1974 and 1990, he covered every World Cup staged in that period, taking in five editions of football’s biggest tournament.
He was also present for the European Championships from 1980 to 1988. Across those years, Italian football changed managers, stars and ambitions, while television remained the shared meeting point for supporters following the national game.
Vitanza’s passing closes a chapter in the broadcasting history of Serie A and the wider Italian football landscape. His work belonged to an era when programmes such as 90º minuto and La Domenica Sportiva helped define how the championship was experienced beyond the stadium.
