Erik Lira and Amaury García: Pumas Products Who Won Big at Cruz Azul

At La Noria in Mexico City, the thread between Cruz Azul and Pumas runs deeper than finals and recent friction. A succession of players raised in Pumas’ academy have crossed the capital’s football divide, and Erik Lira and Amaury García have given that history a particularly sharp edge after collecting major honours in Cruz Azul colours.

Two academy products, titles in blue

Lira and García both made their senior debuts with Pumas, but their trophy-winning chapters arrived after joining Cruz Azul. Their achievements in the Clausura 2026 cycle also carried a striking setting: each celebrated a Liga MX title at the Olímpico Universitario, the stadium of the club that developed them.

  • Erik Lira has won the Concacaf Champions Cup, Campeón de Campeones, Supercopa MX and the Liga MX Clausura 2026 title with Cruz Azul.
  • Amaury García has lifted the Concacaf Champions Cup, Campeón de Campeones and the Liga MX Clausura 2026 trophy for La Máquina.
  • The league triumph meant two former Pumas youth players were crowned at their old club’s home ground.

For Lira, the move has brought more than silverware. He has become a prominent figure among Cruz Azul supporters and has also built a strong standing with Mexico through his performances at the World Cup.

A longer route from Pumas to Cruz Azul

The Lira and García cases belong to a much older pattern in the Mexican capital. Cruz Azul have repeatedly drawn on footballers whose first professional roots were at Pumas, with some becoming important figures on the other side of the rivalry.

  • Gerardo Torrado began with Pumas in the 1996/97 season before establishing himself as a key Cruz Azul player, where he won the Concacaf Champions Cup and Copa MX.
  • Gonzalo Pineda enjoyed his greatest success at Pumas, winning two league titles there, before a shorter Cruz Azul spell between 2010 and 2011.
  • Joaquín Beltrán, Israel Castro, Jaime Lozano, Pablo Barrera, Jorge Campos, José Luis López and Horacio Cervantes are also among the Pumas-developed players to have represented Cruz Azul.

Rivalry beyond the matchday

The sporting tension between the clubs is usually measured in their finals and direct meetings, but the movement of academy talent has added another layer to a rivalry shaped by shared geography and competing identities. In the current era, Lira stands as the most debated example: a Pumas product who has found titles, status and a large following in the blue of Cruz Azul.
