Suárez drove a ball over the left-field wall Tuesday night, reaching 350 career homers as Cincinnati completed a 4-0 shutout of Atlanta. The ball found its way to a young fan who happened to be celebrating her sixth birthday at the park.
There was a brief burst of delight around her as nearby fans recognized both the souvenir and the occasion. Then the birthday girl made a decision that required no replay review: she threw the ball back onto the field.
The milestone baseball was gone, but the kid had her explanation ready when Braves sideline reporter Wiley Ballard caught up with her.
“I don’t know,” she said. “I just wanted to throw it.”
