Füllkrug’s Brace Earns Bremen 2-2 Draw Against Paderborn

Werder Bremen recovered from two goals down to draw 2-2 with Paderborn 07 at the Weserstadion on Bundesliga Matchday 6. Niclas Füllkrug scored twice after the interval, including a 65th-minute penalty, but Paderborn nearly won it in stoppage time when Rayan Philippe struck the right post.

Paderborn take control before the break

The visitors began with purpose on Saturday, 17 October 2026, and Karl Hein had work early in the Bremen goal. He saved close-range efforts from Steffen Tigges and Stefano Marino inside the opening seven minutes.

  • Marino was booked in the fourth minute for a dangerous challenge.
  • Füllkrug went close from distance in the 12th minute, while Marco Grüll and Chuki both tested Paderborn goalkeeper Nahuel Noll.
  • Paderborn took the lead on 18 minutes. Tigges led a counterattack and set up Marino, who finished into the top-right corner from inside the area.
  • Steffen Tigges made it 2-0 after 30 minutes, firing a close-range shot low into the left corner.

Bremen had chances to reduce the deficit before half-time. Arthur, Füllkrug and Grüll all forced saves or missed narrowly, while Eren Dinkçi sent an effort just wide after a Füllkrug pass. Paderborn also threatened a third, with Tigges heading over and Laurin Curda narrowly missing from the right.

Füllkrug leads Bremen response

Mitchell Weiser replaced Chuki at the break as Bremen increased the pressure. Paderborn should have extended their lead in the 49th minute, but Marino turned Laurin Ulrich’s corner wide from close range.

  • Füllkrug pulled one back in the 59th minute. Dinkçi released him with a through ball and the striker finished low with his left foot.
  • Cedric Itten came on for Dinkçi four minutes later.
  • Bremen were awarded a penalty on 65 minutes when Curda handled the ball in the area after Olivier Deman’s shot had been blocked.
  • Füllkrug converted from the spot, sending a low right-footed effort beside the left post for 2-2.

Paderborn responded with changes, bringing on Tom Baack and Philippe in the 66th minute, followed by Ruben Müller and Marvin Pieringer in the 75th. Bremen introduced Dariusz Stalmach for Ludovit Reis, then Paul Erevbenagie for Youri Regeer.

Late pressure at both ends

Bremen had the stronger final spell. Weiser saw two attempts saved, Regeer’s header was kept out near the top-left corner, and Weiser headed narrowly wide from a Regeer cross. Füllkrug also had a left-footed shot stopped after Arthur’s pass.

Paderborn remained dangerous. Santiago Castañeda missed from inside the box after Tjark Scheller’s headed set-up, while Mattes Hansen was forced off injured in the 88th minute, with Jonah Sticker taking his place.

  • Regeer was cautioned in the 86th minute for a dangerous foul on Hansen.
  • Four minutes of added time were announced.
  • In the first added minute, Philippe met Raphael Obermair’s cross from the centre of the area and hit the right post.
  • The match ended level at 2-2 after a late exchange of fouls involving Pieringer, Amos Pieper, Scheller and Erevbenagie.
