Mohamed Amoura Sparks Nice’s Early Revival After Back-to-Back Wins

Two 2-1 wins have changed the mood around Nice. Victories over Lille and Strasbourg have offered the club an early sense of renewal, and Mohamed Amoura has quickly become one of the faces of it: a fast, restless forward seeking a fresh start on the Riviera.

Key takeaways

  • Nice have beaten Lille and Strasbourg by identical 2-1 scorelines.
  • Mohamed Amoura has joined the club on loan from Wolfsburg, with a purchase option thought to be worth €20 million.
  • The 26-year-old Algeria international scored against Lille in a performance that helped launch Nice’s campaign.
  • Amoura endured disciplinary problems and Wolfsburg’s relegation last season.
  • Coach Olivier Pantaloni has praised the forward’s commitment while carefully managing his physical workload.

A chance to rebuild in Ligue 1

Amoura’s arrival in Nice came as a surprise after the reputation he had built in Belgium and Germany. Two years after scoring 21 goals for Union Saint-Gilloise, he had strengthened his standing at Wolfsburg, where his value had risen towards €40 million.

Last season, however, did not follow that upward curve. Wolfsburg were relegated, while Amoura was twice punished over behaviour in training. Then-coach Dieter Hecking made clear that the matter was non-negotiable, saying discipline had to be beyond reproach and that it had not been.

Nice have seen a different side of the 1.70m attacker. Pantaloni has stressed that Amoura gives everything in sessions and has an appetite for both the game and the physical demands that come with it. The staff have even had to hold him back at times to protect him from injury.

He was placed on an adapted programme on Thursday, with the work focused on longer distances. Given space, Amoura naturally looks to sprint, and Nice chose to give him recovery time rather than overload him.

Speed, trust and a return to form

There was a difficult international break before his encouraging start at club level. Amoura left Algeria’s 3-1 win over Zambia in tears despite supplying two assists. He has not scored for his country since November 2025, a run now stretching to 13 matches, and the drought has weighed on him.

Algeria coach Brahim Hemdani has nevertheless maintained his faith in the player. At Nice, Amoura answered with a goal against Lille, a display that suggested he could become a central figure in the team’s recovery.

Left-sided teammate Niels Nkounkou believes their understanding is already taking shape. “A connection is developing,” Nkounkou said. “He has outstanding pace, so it is easy for me. I only need to play the ball into space and I know he will reach it. That is where he is most dangerous.”

Pantaloni expects there to be more to come as Amoura improves physically. The Nice coach believes greater fitness will bring sharper decision-making, while noting that the forward already has considerable quality and remains important to the side.

Comfortable through the middle or from a wide position, Amoura now has the opportunity to turn two promising Ligue 1 victories into a proper comeback story after a troubled final season in Germany.
