Felix Agu Suffers Fresh Calf Injury Blow at Werder Bremen

Felix Agu has suffered another setback at Werder Bremen, with a calf muscle injury ruling the full-back out for an unspecified period. The 27-year-old had only just returned to the starting side in Friday’s 7-0 friendly defeat at Twente Enschede.

Agu came off after 40 minutes in the Netherlands. Coach Daniel Thioune said the defender could not continue, and an MRI scan on Monday confirmed the calf problem. Werder expect him to be unavailable “for the time being”.

His wait for another Bundesliga appearance therefore continues. Agu last played in the league on 12 April, in Cologne, before missing Werder’s final five matches of last season. The summer break and pre-season did not bring a full recovery. During the training camp in Zillertal, he featured only once, in a friendly against Bochum.

Contract question grows

The new injury adds weight to a difficult squad-planning decision. Agu’s contract is due to expire, while his availability has remained a recurring problem despite the quality he has often shown when fit.

Since arriving from VfL Osnabrück in 2020, the former Germany Under-21 player has made 101 league appearances for Bremen. That works out at just under 17 per season. He has also represented Nigeria once at senior level.

Thioune knows Agu from their shared time at Osnabrück and has spoken warmly of the player. The 52-year-old recently described their relationship as one of complete trust, calling Agu grounded, kind, a fine footballer and an excellent character. Yet since Thioune took charge in February, Agu has managed only five appearances under him.

Werder’s immediate priority is another recovery. But with a contract decision approaching, the latest absence does little to strengthen Agu’s position or Bremen’s certainty over how to plan for him.
