FIGC Closes Gianluca Rocchi VAR Investigation Without Sanctions

A long-running question over the workings of the VAR room in Lissone has closed without disciplinary consequences for Gianluca Rocchi, the former Serie A and Serie B refereeing chief.

Federal case closed

The FIGC Federal Prosecutor’s Office, led by Giuseppe Chinè, has dismissed its investigation into Rocchi after finding no conduct requiring sporting disciplinary action.

  1. The matter concerned alleged irregularities in relationships within the VAR operations centre in Lissone.
  2. Those claims had also led the Monza Public Prosecutor’s Office to open a criminal investigation.
  3. In that criminal strand, Rocchi, former VAR supervisor Mauro Gervasoni, and former VAR officials Luigi Nasca and Marco Di Vuolo had been investigated on suspicion of complicity in sporting fraud.
  4. The Monza investigation was subsequently dismissed.
  5. The federal sporting proceedings have now reached the same outcome, with the case against Rocchi archived.

No disciplinary breach identified

The federal document stated that no facts of disciplinary significance had emerged from the investigation. Following a separate formal measure, shared in advance with the General Sports Prosecutor’s Office, the proceedings were therefore closed.

For Italian football, the decision ends a case that had placed renewed attention on the VAR structure behind Serie A and Serie B matchdays. Rocchi’s period as the leading referee official had made the investigation relevant beyond the individuals involved, but both the criminal and sporting tracks have now concluded without further action.
