Flick Hails Gabriel Jesus’ Immediate Impact at Barcelona

In Istanbul, where Barcelona begin another Champions League night on Tuesday, Gabriel Jesus has quickly become more than a new attacking option for Hansi Flick. The Brazilian forward has made an immediate impression in Catalonia, with the Barcelona coach praising both his contribution on the pitch and his character away from it.

Flick spoke before the trip to face Galatasaray and said Jesus had exceeded his early expectations. “I am very happy he is in our squad,” the coach said. “He was a slight surprise, honestly, but he is an outstanding person and a very good player for us. His behaviour and character are perfect for the team.”

The coach did not confirm whether Jesus would start at Galatasaray, but circumstances point towards another opportunity. Raphinha is expected to remain unavailable, having also missed Barcelona’s weekend meeting with Getafe.

A fast start in Catalonia

Jesus made his first Barcelona start in Saturday’s 3-0 win over Getafe, stepping in during Raphinha’s absence. He scored in that victory, taking his return to three goals from five appearances since joining the club.

His Champions League introduction was equally sharp. Used from the bench against Feyenoord, Jesus entered with seven minutes remaining and scored as Barcelona swept aside the Dutch side 5-1 in their opening match of the campaign.

Barcelona now travel to Turkey looking to build on that European result. The match against Galatasaray is scheduled for Tuesday in Istanbul, with kick-off at 16:00 Brasília time. Whether from the opening whistle or as an impact substitute, Jesus has given Flick an increasingly convincing case to keep him close to the centre of Barcelona’s attack.
