Mexico City’s Apertura has supplied an unexpected Uruguayan thread for the coming international windows, with Diego Forlán turning to three Liga MX forwards for La Celeste’s September and October commitments. Brian Rodríguez of América, Toluca’s Federico Viñas and Tigres striker Rodrigo Aguirre have each earned a place after productive starts to the 2026 campaign.
The trio arrive from different corners of Mexican football but with the same useful currency for an international coach: goals, regular minutes and a rhythm already established in the opening weeks of the season. Their selection gives Uruguay three attacking options drawn from a league that has become a familiar stop on the country’s football map.
Three forwards, three strong starts in Mexico
Rodríguez has featured five times for América, starting two matches. He has scored three goals while playing 240 minutes, enough to put the winger-forward in Forlán’s plans as Uruguay prepares to regroup.
Viñas has made an equally sharp impression at Toluca. The forward has appeared in six Apertura matches, including four starts, and has matched Rodríguez’s return of three goals. His 354 minutes reflect a more substantial role in Toluca’s early schedule and helped secure his recall to the national set-up.
Aguirre heads into the international period as the busiest of the three. The Tigres attacker has started all seven league games, recording 585 minutes and three goals. That uninterrupted run has made him one of the most consistent Mexican-based players named in the squad.
The Liga MX contingent joins a wider Uruguay group containing established figures from across the continent and Europe. Federico Valverde, Sebastián Cáceres, Giorgian de Arrascaeta and José María Giménez are also included in Forlán’s selection.
For Rodríguez, Viñas and Aguirre, the coming gatherings offer more than a pause from club duty. Each will seek to carry his Mexican form into Uruguay’s international calendar and claim a more lasting role in Forlán’s developing side.
