The French season’s night news has travelled far beyond Ligue 1: former England youth international Courtney Meppen-Walter has died at the age of 32.
The former defender came through Manchester City’s academy and later played for Carlisle United, Stockport County, Bury and Nantwich Town. No details surrounding his death have been made public.
A career shaped in English football
- Meppen-Walter developed at Manchester City and represented England at Under-17 and Under-18 level.
- He went on to play senior football for Carlisle, Stockport and Bury, as well as Nantwich.
- Bury released him at the end of last season.
- The club paid tribute on Tuesday, saying it was “deeply saddened” to learn of the death of its former player.
Tributes after the former defender’s death
Jon Gold, chairman of Nantwich, remembered Meppen-Walter as an exceptional character with a huge heart.
His career was also marked by a 2013 prison sentence. Meppen-Walter received 16 months in jail after a fatal road collision in September 2012 which killed two people, aged 32 and 37.
He was 32 when he died.
