Former Napoli Midfielder Diego Demme Announces Retirement

Diego Demme has brought his playing career to an end, closing a journey that included five seasons at Napoli and a significant spell with RB Leipzig. The German midfielder leaves the game after a final campaign in which he made 15 appearances for Hertha Berlin.

For Napoli, Demme represented a familiar figure across a changing period at the club. He arrived in 2019 and remained until 2024, serving the side through different coaches, changing ambitions and several demanding Serie A seasons.

Quick facts

  • Diego Demme has announced his retirement from professional football.
  • The German midfielder played for Napoli from 2019 to 2024.
  • He made 15 appearances for Hertha Berlin last season.
  • Several Italian Serie B clubs had shown interest before his move in Germany.
  • His longest and most productive spell came at RB Leipzig: 214 matches, two goals and 17 assists.

Demme’s strongest statistical period came in Leipzig, where he accumulated 214 matches and supplied 17 assists alongside his two goals. It was there that he established the consistency which later earned him a move to Naples.

His final months as a professional were spent back in Germany with Hertha Berlin. Italian Serie B teams had also pursued him, but Demme chose the Berlin route and featured 15 times during the previous season.

A farewell shaped by the whole journey

In a message posted on his social media channels, Demme said the time had arrived to leave behind something that had been part of almost his entire life. He reflected on a childhood wish to play in major stadiums, a dream he said eventually became reality.

“There comes a moment when you have to say goodbye to something that has accompanied you for almost your whole life,” Demme wrote. “For me, that moment has arrived.”

He looked back on major matches and successes, but also on defeats, setbacks and difficult periods that helped form him both as a footballer and as a person. Demme described football as more than work, calling it his life, his passion and part of his everyday existence.

The former Napoli midfielder thanked his family, friends, team-mates, coaches, clubs and everyone who shared the path with him. His announcement drew hundreds of messages from Napoli supporters, former colleagues and fans who had followed his career from Leipzig to Serie A and back to Germany.
