Kaïl Boudache is still waiting for his first goal or assist in Lyon colours, but the 20-year-old winger has already begun to leave a mark in the margins of the season. On the right flank, where pace and nerve can change the temperature of a European night, the Algerian Under-23 international has given Paulo Fonseca another developing option.
A first summer arrival for Lyon
Boudache became Lyon’s first signing of the summer, agreeing a five-year contract after leaving Nice, the club where he was developed.

Mahrez comparison, with room to grow
The early comparisons with Riyad Mahrez have followed Boudache because of his ability to beat a man, though those around him stress that his game remains a work in progress.
Johann Louvel, who worked with Boudache during his time at Nice, said great players do not need to excel in every department if their strongest qualities are exceptional. He pointed to Mahrez’s first touch and explosive qualities, and sees related traits in Lyon’s young winger.

Fonseca values his defensive contribution
Boudache has made nine appearances in all competitions this season, starting three times and playing 341 minutes. His statistical return remains empty so far, but Fonseca has focused on the elements beneath the numbers.
After Lyon’s Europa League victory over Anderlecht on September 16, the Portuguese coach praised the youngster’s willingness to take responsibility with the ball. Fonseca called him quick and technically gifted, but said his favourite aspect was the way Boudache had helped the team without possession.
For a winger still at the beginning of his Lyon chapter, that mix of individual courage and defensive discipline is giving Fonseca a foundation on which to build.
