Vinicius Faces Key Real Madrid Test Against Leipzig Before Suspension

Real Madrid’s Champions League meeting with Leipzig offers Vinicius Junior a vital stage before an enforced absence leaves room for others to press their case. The Brazilian arrives under pressure after a difficult run of form, a domestic suspension lasting until the end of November and renewed scrutiny over his place on the left side of Madrid’s attack.

A European night before a long break

  1. Vinicius will face Leipzig before dropping out of Real Madrid’s competitive schedule until 4 November, when the club travel to AEK Athens for their fourth European fixture.

  2. He also has one remaining league ban to serve, at Mestalla. It is a ground where he has regularly faced a hostile reception, and he missed the corresponding match last season through accumulated yellow cards.

  3. The suspension followed his red card against Villarreal, when he pulled William Saliba’s hair. Vinicius later apologised on social media, but the incident again placed him at the centre of attention.

The Bernabeu had only recently begun to ease its criticism of the forward. There had been conspicuous dissatisfaction from sections of the home crowd during earlier parts of the campaign, although the noise appeared to soften during the Villarreal match before the dismissal changed the mood again.

Roma setback and competition on the left

His recent Champions League display in Rome added to the concern. Vinicius struggled to make an attacking impact and failed to take decisive opportunities. The most damaging moment came in the move for Roma’s 2-1 goal: an attempted backheel in midfield did not come off, allowing the counterattack that ended in the net.

Jose Mourinho reacted by taking him off and mimicking the failed gesture from the touchline. The episode eventually became a private matter between coach and player, but it underlined a testing evening for one of Madrid’s established stars.

At the same time, Diomande has been making a strong claim in the area Vinicius once occupied without serious challenge. The Ivorian helped transform the second half in Rome, then supplied both a spectacular goal and an assist against Sevilla. A week earlier, he had settled the Villarreal match with the only goal.

Diomande’s form has intensified the questions around Madrid’s left flank. Arda Guler’s current momentum and the tactical choices surrounding Federico Valverde further complicate the picture for Vinicius.

Mourinho makes performance the standard

Mourinho made clear before the Leipzig game that no player’s standing guarantees selection. Asked whether Vinicius remained untouchable, he replied: “The badge is untouchable. I do not like the idea of an untouchable player.”

The Madrid coach added that status, captaincy, years at the club and transfer cost do not protect a footballer: “What makes a player untouchable is what he delivers on the pitch.”

That makes Leipzig more than another Champions League appointment for Vinicius. It is an opportunity to produce the kind of decisive performance that once made him Madrid’s leading attacking reference point, before two weeks away from the side allow rivals to occupy his space. A statement under the Bernabeu lights would leave his place in sharper focus before the calendar removes him from it.
