Francesco Totti’s place in Rome has never depended on nostalgia alone. The former Roma captain remains one of Serie A’s defining figures, and at the age of 50 he has looked back on the players, clubs and unfinished possibilities that shaped his view of football.
The one partnership Totti wishes he had experienced
For all that he achieved in a career spent entirely with Roma, Totti identified one regret: he would have liked to share a side with Ronaldo Nazário, the Brazilian forward known as “Il Fenomeno”.
Asked to name the game’s greatest representative, however, Totti did not hesitate over his choice. For him, Diego Maradona stands above the rest.

Totti’s bond with Roma was the central thread of his career, yet he admitted that, had he ever left the Giallorossi, Milan would have been his preferred destination. It was a club he supported as a boy, long before he became inseparable from Roma.
His fascination was rooted in Arrigo Sacchi’s Milan, particularly the side built around Frank Rijkaard, Ruud Gullit and Marco van Basten. Totti remembered that group as an exceptional team which won everything available to it.
Even after retirement, the pull of the pitch has not disappeared. Totti said he would give anything to play again, a feeling that underlines how closely his identity remains tied to Sunday afternoons, dressing rooms and the game that made him Roma’s enduring captain.
