In Argentina’s latest friendly against Burkina Faso, Franco Mastantuono found the net in a convincing win, adding another bright moment to a season that has carried him from Real Madrid ownership to a loan spell at Fiorentina. Yet the 19-year-old’s growing profile with the Albiceleste has also brought a weight he cannot entirely control: comparisons with Lionel Messi and talk of succeeding him as a leader.
The news from the club
Mastantuono, contracted to Real Madrid and currently playing for Fiorentina, is enjoying a productive period and took his chance on the international stage with a goal against Burkina Faso.
After the match, however, he addressed the demands surrounding his place in Argentina’s future. The midfielder said supporters hold him to high standards and that he understands both the scrutiny and the expectations attached to his name.
“People are very demanding with me,” Mastantuono said. “I understand it and I understand what is expected of me. They can be harsh with me at times, but I try to enjoy it.”
He insisted that criticism is part of the profession, while drawing a line between his own responsibilities and the wider discussion over Argentina’s leadership after Messi.
“I am not complaining about criticism,” he said. “I am a footballer and I understand it. But people talk about things that are not up to me. I just do my job and try to do it well every time. I know there is a lot of expectation and I like that, but I play for my team and for myself, not for those expectations.”
