Lille’s Champions League campaign is already slipping away after Galatasaray left the Pierre-Mauroy with a 4-2 victory, inflicting a third successive European defeat on Davide Ancelotti’s side. The French club have no points from three matches and have conceded 10 times, a damaging return for a squad weakened during the summer and not substantially reinforced for this level.
Ancelotti had seen his team recover from another troubled opening, only for familiar defensive failures to turn a promising first half into a bruising night. Yunus Akgun struck after barely two minutes, taking advantage of uncertainty at the back to quieten the home crowd and underline Lille’s recurring difficulty in settling into Champions League matches.
Yet the response came from an unexpected source. Soriba Diaoune, handed his first Champions League start at only 19, gave Lille a route back into the contest with an outstanding display before the interval. The young forward levelled after rounding the goalkeeper and finishing into an empty net, then put his side ahead with an assured first-time strike.
For a brief spell, Lille had transformed the match and Ancelotti’s faith in Diaoune had been rewarded. But Galatasaray again found room where Lille could least afford it. Just before half-time, Batrakov met a cross with a header to make it 2-2, exposing the home side’s vulnerability against deliveries into the box. It was Lille’s eighth concession across their opening three Champions League fixtures at that point.
Galatasaray pull clear after the break
The Turkish visitors required little encouragement after the restart. Torreira put Galatasaray in front from a corner that initially appeared to carry little danger, and the contest moved beyond Lille almost immediately afterwards when Victor Osimhen added the fourth.
Osimhen, who has a past connection with Lille, apologised to the home supporters after scoring, but there was no relief for Ancelotti’s team. Lille could not produce another response and the final score left their European position looking increasingly precarious.
Diaoune’s emergence offered one of the few encouraging notes for a side facing a difficult continental week, but the wider picture is severe: three defeats, 10 goals allowed and no margin left for error if Lille are to keep their hopes of reaching the next Champions League stage alive.
