Getafe Hold Rayo Vallecano to 1-1 Draw Despite Red Card

At the Coliseum on Madrid’s southern edge, Getafe’s resistance with 10 men earned José Bordalás’ side a 1-1 derby draw against Rayo Vallecano, denying the visitors a win after they had controlled long stretches of the night.

Key takeaways

  • Álvaro García put Rayo ahead in the 10th minute, while Martín Satriano struck Getafe’s equaliser after the interval.
  • Getafe played from the 28th minute onward without Djené, who was sent off for bringing down García as he threatened to break into the area.
  • Rayo finished with 68% possession and 21 attempts, but could register only five efforts on target.
  • Dani Carvajal made his first competitive Getafe appearance, starting the match after nearly five months without playing.
  • Pathé Ciss will miss Rayo’s next fixture after collecting a yellow card that triggers a suspension.

Rayo’s control meets Getafe’s resolve

The sides had begun the ninth LaLiga round level on eight points, but it was Rayo who settled first in Getafe. Florian Lejeune won possession and threaded a pass into Jorge de Frutos, whose square delivery allowed Álvaro García to finish at the far post.

Rayo had chances to extend that advantage. Sergio Camello shot over after finding space, while David Soria denied him with an important save. Yet Getafe retained a threat despite losing Djené. The defender had earlier been cautioned for handling the ball to stop a Rayo break, and his later foul on García brought a direct dismissal.

Emil Audero then produced a fine save to turn Enes Ünal’s header on to the post. A Kiko Femenía finish before half-time was also ruled out because the ball had gone out of play in the build-up.

Bordalás reshaped his side at the break, bringing on Francho Serrano and Andrés García. The adjustment paid off in the 57th minute: Francho’s cross travelled towards Ünal, but Satriano lifted his leg to direct an improvised finish beyond Audero.

Rayo continued to carry the larger share of the ball and territory. Pedro Díaz, Pedrosa and Alemão all had late opportunities, although Getafe almost completed an unlikely turnaround when Satriano’s long-range strike forced another strong Audero intervention.

The final figures illustrated Rayo’s territorial superiority, with 68% possession, 21 shots and five on target to Getafe’s 12 attempts and four on target. Both teams took eight corners. Getafe accumulated seven yellow cards alongside the red, compared with Rayo’s three cautions.

Coaches find different value in the point

Beñat San José felt Rayo had created enough to leave with all three points. The Rayo coach said collecting a point always matters, but his team had done “everything” required to win, pointing to its first-half dominance and clear second-half opportunities. He described Getafe’s leveller as a goal born from a familiar route, a cross followed by a finish.

San José rejected the suggestion that his substitutions had arrived too late, explaining that Iván Balliu’s booking had to be managed. He also expressed hope that Rayo would return to winning ways in their next home fixture.

Goalscorer Álvaro García was more frustrated with Rayo’s failure to convert their superiority. He said the visitors had merited more goals before the break, but then relaxed and allowed the contest to move into the kind of game Getafe handle well. “We lacked precision and gave away silly balls,” he said.

The winger also addressed Rayo’s supporters, insisting the squad stands with them and wants the situation around the club resolved. “Rayo is nothing without its fans,” he said.

For Bordalás, the draw represented a survival exercise rather than a point of satisfaction. He praised his players for reorganising after the sending-off and for their commitment following a recent European outing. The Getafe coach said his team had actually looked more ordered with 10 men than with 11, while acknowledging that repeated turnovers had helped Rayo exploit their pace.

Before kick-off, Bordalás had been presented with a commemorative shirt by club president Ángel Torres to mark his 350 matches in charge of Getafe. After the draw, he said any possible new additions would be difficult to secure at this stage, although he welcomed help within the club’s financial scope and praised Getafe’s efforts in that regard.

Carvajal, warmly applauded when he was replaced in the second half, said he was pleased with his debut and with the response after Getafe conceded and lost a player early. The full-back reported feeling reasonably good physically despite having spent almost five months without a match, though cramp led him to request the substitution. He now expects to build sharpness through training and games, with Getafe due to face Lugano on Thursday in a demanding run of fixtures every three days.
