With five days left on the 2026 regular-season calendar, the American League still has three unsettled pieces on its board: the AL Central, the AL West and the last Wild Card berth. Cleveland, Chicago, Houston and Texas are chasing three remaining playoff places, with the Central winner also in position to grab a valuable first-round bye.
The AL Central race
The Guardians begin Wednesday at 82-75, a game ahead of the White Sox at 81-76. Cleveland has two games in Boston before finishing with three in Kansas City. Chicago opens a two-game set in Kansas City, then returns home for three against Colorado.
| Club | Record | Remaining schedule |
|---|---|---|
| Guardians | 82-75 | 2 at Red Sox, 3 at Royals |
| White Sox | 81-76 | 2 at Royals, 3 vs. Rockies |
Chicago’s season has already been one of the league’s sharpest turns. The White Sox lost 101 games in 2023, followed by 121 losses in 2024 and 102 more in 2025. They spent much of this summer in first place and held a 5 1/2-game cushion in mid-August. Cleveland moved into first by itself last Friday and has stayed there.
The tiebreaker matters. Chicago won seven of the 13 head-to-head games, edging Cleveland 58-57 in runs across the season series. If the clubs land on the same record, the White Sox would take the division. Standings ties are settled by those mathematical tiebreakers rather than a one-game playoff.
There is more than a flag at stake. The Central champion is likely to become the AL’s No. 2 seed, earning a trip straight to the Division Series and home field there. The Yankees and Red Sox own the league’s second- and third-best records, but Wild Card clubs cannot rise above the fourth and fifth seeds.
Cleveland stands four games clear of both AL West contenders, though it loses tiebreakers to Houston and Texas. Chicago is three games ahead of each; it owns the edge over the Rangers but not the Astros.
The AL West race
Houston and Texas arrive at Wednesday tied at 78-79, each trying to avoid a division crown with a losing record. No divisional-era champion, dating to 1969, has finished below .500. The 2005 Padres came closest at 82-80.
| Club | Record | Remaining schedule |
|---|---|---|
| Astros | 78-79 | 1 at Mariners, 4 at Athletics |
| Rangers | 78-79 | 2 vs. Mets, 3 at Twins |
The Astros carry the important edge between the two. They went 9-4 against the Rangers and outscored them by 23 runs, so Houston would claim the division if the clubs finish even. That would be the Astros’ eighth West title in 10 seasons.
Texas has not won the division since 2016. Its 2023 championship season began from a Wild Card slot. The Rangers briefly moved one game ahead of Houston over the weekend, but an Astros victory paired with a Texas loss Monday restored the deadlock. Houston has otherwise largely controlled the division since early August.
The Wild Card picture
The Yankees, at 90-67, have secured the top AL Wild Card position, the No. 4 seed and home field for their Wild Card Series. Boston, 84-73, has also clinched a playoff berth and remains the favorite for the No. 5 seed, holding both a three-game lead over Chicago and the season tiebreaker against the White Sox.
| Club | Record | Playoff standing |
|---|---|---|
| Yankees | 90-67 | Clinched; top Wild Card, No. 4 seed |
| Red Sox | 84-73 | Clinched; leading for No. 5 seed |
| White Sox | 81-76 | Holding the final Wild Card position |
| Rangers | 78-79 | Still alive in division and Wild Card chase |
Boston’s hold is not entirely comfortable. The Red Sox have dropped three in a row and eight of their past 12, with Cleveland and the Cubs still on the schedule. Weather also could affect the series against Chicago at Fenway Park.
The runner-up in the Central remains the likeliest club to take the final Wild Card place and draw the No. 3 seed in the opening round. The Blue Jays and Orioles entered Wednesday on the brink, each facing elimination with either one loss or one White Sox victory. The second-place team in the West has a difficult path to leap Chicago.
One far-end scenario shows why the head-to-head results remain so important. If both Houston and Texas go 4-1, while Cleveland and Chicago each finish 1-4, the Astros and Rangers would end at 82-80. Houston would win the West on its tiebreaker. Cleveland would take the Central at 83-79, one game ahead of Chicago, and the White Sox would reach 82-80 and beat Texas for the final Wild Card through their tiebreaker.
That finish would send Cleveland to the Division Series with its bye, place No. 3 Houston against No. 6 Chicago in the Wild Card Series, and leave Texas out despite an 82-win finish.
Wednesday’s clinching paths
- Cleveland can secure a postseason berth by winning in Boston while either Texas loses to the Mets or Houston loses in Seattle.
- Chicago can clinch a playoff spot by beating Kansas City and getting a Rangers loss against the Mets.
- The eventual Central champion can lock up the Wild Card Series bye and Division Series home field if Cleveland beats Boston, Houston loses at Seattle and Texas falls to the Mets.
