In Buenos Aires, San Lorenzo’s latest boardroom reshuffle is set to claim Guillermo Franco after only a few months in the role of football manager. The former Monterrey forward, a figure with deep personal ties to the club where he was developed and made his senior debut, is expected to leave by mutual agreement following the heavy defeat to Defensa y Justicia.
Franco had been part of the sporting leadership alongside Walter Perazzo and Martín Saric, arriving during a broader reorganisation triggered by Marcelo Culotta’s presidential election victory. The new administration turned to the Mexican-Argentine former striker after a difficult spell in which San Lorenzo fell out of the Argentine league title race and exited the 2026 Copa Sudamericana at the round-of-16 stage.
A disagreement over the bench
The decisive strain came with the search for a replacement after Gustavo Álvarez departed as coach. Franco backed Néstor “Pipo” Gorosito for the vacant post, but San Lorenzo instead appointed Rubén Darío Insúa Carballo, a choice the manager did not support.
That difference widened existing tensions within the club’s senior structure, with day-to-day decisions also contributing to the deterioration in relations. Franco’s departure is now close to being formalised, ending a brief executive chapter for a man better known across the continent for his playing career, notably his historic spell with Monterrey.
