Stockholm has given Viktor Gyökeres a very different stage from the one awaiting him in north London. During Sweden’s latest international window, the Arsenal forward has turned decisive moments into goals, carrying Graham Potter’s side to the summit of Group H with 10 points from four matches.
Sweden closed the period unbeaten, taking three wins and one draw. Gyökeres supplied the winning strike in a 2-1 victory over Romania, scored as Poland were beaten 3-1, rescued a 1-1 draw with Bosnia and Herzegovina, and then settled the return against Romania with the only goal in a 1-0 result.
The return fixtures against Bosnia and Herzegovina and Poland still lie ahead, but Sweden’s position owes much to the forward’s consistency. His latest goal also placed him alone in Nations League history: Gyökeres has now scored in seven consecutive matches in the competition.
A Nations League mark beyond Mitrovic and Sesko
The previous benchmark was five straight Nations League scoring appearances. Serbia’s Aleksandar Mitrovic and Slovenia’s Benjamin Sesko both reached that total in 2024. Gyökeres has moved past them, extending his run to seven with the winner against Romania.
It is a notable contrast with his club season. Arsenal have played five matches so far, yet Gyökeres has not scored in the Premier League. The Swedish international arrived from Sporting CP after a campaign in Portugal in which he scored 45 times, but his first Arsenal season brought 21 goals, roughly half that return.
That reduced output had fed summer discussion around his future, including reports of a possible exchange involving Julián Álvarez. Instead, he remains at Arsenal, returning from international duty with a record in his pocket and a familiar question following him back across Europe: whether Sweden’s prolific focal point can find the same rhythm in an Arsenal shirt.
