Gyökeres Fires Sweden Past Romania to Stay Top of Nations League Group

Viktor Gyökeres settled the evening early in Romania, and Sweden held firm thereafter to protect both a 1-0 win and their place at the summit of their UEFA Nations League group.

Key takeaways

  • Gyökeres scored in the 13th minute as Sweden won 1-0 away to Romania.
  • Graham Potter’s Sweden remain unbeaten after four League B fixtures.
  • Hungary defeated Ukraine 2-1 on the road, responding to their opening-match loss against the same opponents.
  • Northern Ireland drew 0-0 with Georgia and stayed top of their group.
  • Bosnia-Herzegovina beat Poland 1-0 late on to strengthen their hold on second place in Group 4.

Sweden set the pace in League B

Sweden travelled to Romania without Alexander Isak but still found the decisive touch through Arsenal forward Gyökeres. His 13th-minute strike was enough to separate the teams, with the visitors seeing out a narrow victory.

The result leaves Potter’s side undefeated through the first four rounds of the Nations League campaign. Sweden lead their League B section, while Bosnia-Herzegovina sit behind them after their own important win over Poland.

Bosnia-Herzegovina had to wait until late in the match to break Poland’s resistance, but their 1-0 success reinforced second position in Group 4.

Hungary revive their challenge as Georgia still wait

Hungary produced one of the night’s significant away results, beating Ukraine 2-1. Marco Rossi’s team had lost to Ukraine in the opening round, but turned the fixture around this time and moved back into contention near the top of Group B2.

Ukraine, meanwhile, have now suffered consecutive defeats, increasing the pressure after a promising start to the group.

Elsewhere in the same section, Northern Ireland and Georgia played out a goalless draw. Northern Ireland remain leaders, while Georgia, with Khvicha Kvaratskhelia in their ranks, are still waiting for both their first goal and their first win of this Nations League campaign.
