In Houston, where Héctor Herrera’s return was meant to add experience and calm to the Dynamo midfield, the Mexican international has instead found himself at the centre of another difficult afternoon. Sporting Kansas City left with a 2-0 win, while Herrera departed before half-time after being sent off for his part in a confrontation that turned an already tense match into a familiar disciplinary problem.
The dismissal came in first-half stoppage time. A dispute between Houston’s Andre Luiz and Sporting Kansas City defender Franco Negri drew players from both sides into the exchange. As the crowd gathered, Herrera became involved with Taylor Calheira, the Sporting forward, taking hold of him around the neck before shoving him to the ground. The referee showed Herrera a straight red card.
Houston had to continue with 10 men and could not recover, losing 2-0 to their visitors from Missouri. For Herrera, it was another unwanted marker in a career that has carried him from Mexico to Portugal, Spain and the United States, but which has also been punctuated by moments of indiscipline during his MLS time.
A second Houston spell under scrutiny
Herrera had previously faced punishment in November 2024, during his first spell with the Dynamo. He received a two-match ban and a financial fine after spitting towards an official in a match against the Seattle Sounders.
That incident became part of the background to his departure from the Texas club. Pat Onstad, Houston’s general manager at the time, said the decision not to offer the midfielder a new contract was principally based on a decline in his performances, while also acknowledging that the incident involving the referee had played a role.
After leaving Houston, Herrera returned to Liga MX with Toluca in 2025. His time with the Diablos Rojos brought a league double, as well as the Campeón de Campeones and Campeones Cup trophies.
He returned to Houston at the beginning of 2026 and had been a regular presence in the side, playing more than 20 matches and scoring twice before the red card against Sporting Kansas City. The Dynamo now face the consequences of losing an experienced midfielder, while Herrera again confronts questions that have followed him across his MLS career.
