Haaland Reaches 61 Champions League Goals Faster Than Messi

Manchester City’s European night against Paris Saint-Germain ended in a 4-2 defeat, but Erling Haaland still left the second round of the 2026/27 Champions League with another landmark to his name. The Norwegian forward scored twice, including a header, to reach 61 goals in the competition at the age of 26.

That return took Haaland beyond Lionel Messi’s pace to 60 Champions League goals. Messi required 80 appearances in the tournament to arrive at that total, while Haaland has reached the next rung of the scoring ladder far earlier in his European career.

His double also made him Manchester City’s outright leading scorer in the Champions League. Haaland now has 38 goals for the club in the competition, moving clear of Sergio Agüero, whose City total stood at 36.

The 61-goal figure has been built across three clubs. Before his Manchester spell, Haaland scored eight times in the Champions League for RB Salzburg and added 15 during his time with Borussia Dortmund.

Haaland moves into the Champions League’s top seven

Haaland is now seventh on the all-time Champions League scoring list, ten goals behind Raúl in sixth. Cristiano Ronaldo remains the competition’s leading scorer with 141, followed by Messi on 129. Robert Lewandowski has 109, Karim Benzema 90 and Kylian Mbappé 72.

Behind Haaland, Harry Kane and Thomas Müller are level on 57 goals, while Ruud van Nistelrooy has 56. For City, the result against PSG was difficult, particularly after a commanding first-half display from the visitors, but Haaland’s latest two goals placed him in increasingly rare continental company.
