Hansi Flick focuses Barcelona on Galatasaray test in Istanbul

Barcelona arrive in Istanbul carrying the weight of Champions League expectation, but their coach has made clear that Galatasaray’s stadium, rather than talk of favourites or Madrid, is the immediate concern. With the road to the final still long, he called it a privilege to be regarded among Europe’s leading contenders while warning that the atmosphere awaiting his side could make the night difficult.

Gabriel Jesus is available and could again start, although Barcelona’s coach said the final selection would be made after training. He described the forward as a welcome surprise, praising both his attitude and his quality. “He is ready,” the coach said. “We are very happy with him. His behaviour has been fantastic and he is a great player.”

Istanbul test before the wider Champions League picture

Barcelona have been widely viewed as one of the sides in the strongest form, a status their coach accepted without allowing it to become complacency. He said it was an honour for opponents to place the club among the favourites, but stressed that football can shift quickly and that every European assignment demands its own response.

He said his players must reproduce the mentality shown at the beginning of the season throughout the campaign, while retaining control of possession. For Barcelona, he added, reaching the final is not a short journey but one that requires the same focus in every match.

The coach’s central warning concerned the setting in Istanbul. He called Galatasaray’s atmosphere one of the best in the world, pointing to the noise inside the stadium and to the Turkish side’s improved performances against major opponents. Barcelona, he said, will have to stay united.

Respect for Galatasaray, silence on Madrid

Questions concerning Real Madrid, including criticism from the Spanish champions over refereeing and whether the approach of El Clásico was driving comments from the capital, were firmly dismissed. Barcelona’s coach said he does not answer questions about other clubs and urged attention to remain on Galatasaray.

Asked whether he would prefer Vinicius to play, he again refused to be drawn, saying the question could be put to him in two weeks’ time.

He also offered praise for Galatasaray’s squad after their previous match. Asked which of their players might be capable of playing for Barcelona, he said they had all performed well, adding that young footballers with talent and ambition should be allowed to dream of such a future.
