With one month left before the Ballon d’Or ceremony in London on Monday 26 October, the race remains unusually open. The loudest campaigns may not decide it: Bayern Munich striker Harry Kane has emerged as the leading candidate after a season built on relentless scoring.
Kane, 33, has largely avoided talking up his own case. His record has done the work instead, with 61 goals in 51 appearances for Bayern in 2025-26 and 73 when his England matches are included.
The England forward also impressed at the 2026 World Cup. Market assessments in Britain have strengthened his position in recent weeks, with his implied chances rising by 43%.

Kane ahead as rivals make their cases

Yamal’s World Cup, however, did not carry the same force as his club form. Spain lifted the trophy in 2026, but the young dribbler was less prominent during the tournament, and his prospects have weakened by 28%.
Mbappé is third despite an extensive media push. The Real Madrid forward has argued his case in interviews, pointing to his goals for club and country during a campaign that brought him no team trophy.
The France captain’s strongest individual achievement came in America this summer, where he became the World Cup’s all-time leading scorer. It has not shifted the balance in his favour, though, with his position slipping by 17% as the vote approaches.
Former Ligue 1 figures remain in the picture
Behind the leading three are Rodri, Lionel Messi, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, Dembélé and Fabian Ruiz. Their paths look narrower unless the final weeks bring a sharp change in opinion.
For French football, Dembélé remains the holder of the prize, while former Paris Saint-Germain forward Mbappé is chasing a first Ballon d’Or after a season of personal milestones. Kane’s numbers, though, have left the rest of the field trying to close ground in the final month.
