How Lillestrøm Reached the Europa League Without a Play-Off

On the edge of Oslo, Lillestrøm’s Europa League meeting with Real Sociedad arrives after one of the most unusual qualification routes in recent Scandinavian football. The Norwegian club did not have to contest the decisive play-off that was meant to settle the matter, yet a sequence of cup titles, calendar changes and Bodø/Glimt’s league position carried them into Europe.

A cup place shaped by Norway’s changing calendar

The story began at the end of 2025, when Lillestrøm were still playing in Norway’s second tier. They produced the country’s major domestic surprise by winning the Norwegian Cup, an achievement that normally brought direct access to the 2026-27 Europa League.

Norwegian football is played across the calendar year, from winter towards autumn. In an effort to bring its competitions closer to the European schedule, the Norwegian Football Federation then staged a shortened new cup competition early in 2026, finishing it in May.

  • Lillestrøm won the Norwegian Cup at the end of 2025 while competing in the second division.
  • That trophy initially secured the club’s place in the 2026-27 Europa League.
  • A rapid additional cup tournament was held at the beginning of 2026 as part of the calendar adjustment.
  • Bodø/Glimt won that second cup, having eliminated Lillestrøm in the quarter-finals.

By the time that second tournament concluded, Lillestrøm had already returned to the top flight. Norway’s domestic season does not pause through the summer in the same way as many of Europe’s major leagues, and the club’s circumstances had changed quickly.

Bodø/Glimt’s European place removes the need for a play-off

Two separate cup winners had emerged, but only one Europa League berth was attached to the cup route. The initial solution was a play-off between Lillestrøm and Bodø/Glimt to decide who would take it.

That match was never needed. Bodø/Glimt had already made their own European qualification secure through their position in the Eliteserien, so the cup allocation was passed directly to Lillestrøm.

  • The planned deciding match was between the two cup winners.
  • Bodø/Glimt’s league-based European qualification made that contest unnecessary.
  • Lillestrøm inherited the cup place without playing the proposed final qualifier.
  • The club therefore reached the Europa League after winning the 2025 cup as a second-tier side.

A historic Norwegian club meets Real Sociedad

The eventual outcome has placed one of Norway’s oldest and most established clubs on the continental stage against Real Sociedad in the town adjoining Oslo. Lillestrøm’s route was extraordinary, shaped by administrative transition as much as results on the pitch.

Real Sociedad also arrived through the domestic cup pathway, though by a far more straightforward route. For Lillestrøm, the European tie is the final destination of a remarkable chain of events: a lower-division cup triumph, promotion, a second national cup winner, and a European place transferred without the scheduled play-off.
