Carolina kept rolling through a back-to-back in Philadelphia, using a three-goal second period to beat the Flyers 4-1 at Xfinity Mobile Arena on Sunday. The Hurricanes have won five straight and moved to 5-1-1. Philadelphia fell to 0-5-2, its seventh consecutive loss to begin the season and the longest season-opening skid in franchise history.
- Hurricanes captain Jordan Staal was out with a lower-body injury.
- Pyotr Kochetkov stopped 18 shots for Carolina.
- Joseph Woll made 26 saves for Philadelphia.
- Sebastian Aho posted a goal and an assist. He has six goals and five assists during his active six-game point streak.
- Andrei Svechnikov had one goal and one assist.
- Mark Jankowski scored again, stretching his goal streak to four games.
- William Carrier supplied two assists, while Shayne Gostisbehere also scored.
- Christian Dvorak scored Philadelphia’s lone goal.
After a scoreless first period, Svechnikov opened the scoring at 10:16 of the second. He carried the rush into the left circle and beat Woll to put Carolina ahead.
Gostisbehere doubled the margin 3:29 later. Aho threaded the puck through the middle to the defenseman near the bottom of the left circle, and Gostisbehere finished the chance against his former club.
The Flyers got within one at 15:26. Denver Barkey worked the puck from the right side of the Carolina zone back to Nick Seeler at the point, and Seeler’s shot changed direction off Dvorak in the slot before slipping past Kochetkov.
Carolina answered before the period was over. Carrier found Aho across the slot at 16:54, restoring the Hurricanes’ two-goal cushion at 3-1.
Jankowski sealed it midway through the third. Seeler blocked a Jordan Martinook attempt, but the rebound kicked into the high slot for Jankowski, who buried his chance at 15:09.
The Hurricanes arrived after a 5-2 win over the Chicago Blackhawks on Saturday. Philadelphia was also playing the second half of a back-to-back following a 5-1 defeat against the Boston Bruins.
