Iga Swiatek Reaches China Open Quarterfinals After Beating Iva Jovic

Iga Swiatek swept past American teenager Iva Jovic 6-1, 6-3 on Wednesday, reaching the China Open quarterfinals in Beijing after their first match against one another. The Polish six-time Grand Slam champion needed 1 hour and 36 minutes to end Jovic’s six-match winning run.

  1. Swiatek stormed through the first five games of the opening set, establishing complete control before Jovic held in the sixth game to get on the board. Swiatek then served out the set, converting her fifth set point.
  2. The Pole struck first again in set two, breaking for a 2-0 advantage.
  3. Jovic, 18 and at a career-best world No. 13, found greater depth from the baseline and recovered the break to draw level. She saved two break points in the following game before moving ahead 3-2.
  4. Swiatek responded immediately, taking the final four games and breaking twice during the closing stretch to seal a straight-sets win.

Jovic arrived in Beijing after lifting the Guadalajara title last month, but Swiatek’s early return pressure prevented the American from building on that momentum for long. The teenager’s stronger second-set resistance briefly changed the rhythm, yet Swiatek regained control when the decisive games arrived.

Ranking milestones in Beijing

The victory was Swiatek’s ninth over a top-20 opponent in 2026, alongside eight defeats. She has also compiled a 35-8 record this season against players ranked outside the top 10.

By making the last eight, Swiatek has reached her 31st WTA 1000 quarterfinal. Among active players, only world No. 2 Aryna Sabalenka has made more, with 33.

Swiatek also claimed her 36th WTA 1000 win against a top-15 rival. Serena Williams, on 44, and Sabalenka, on 41, are the only active-player comparisons ahead of her in that category.

Quarterfinal opponent still to be decided

Swiatek will next meet either third seed Coco Gauff or 13th seed Elise Mertens. She holds an 11-5 career record against Gauff, though the American has won each of their past four contests without dropping a set. Swiatek is unbeaten in two previous meetings with Mertens.
