Brazil’s visit to Kolkata has turned an international friendly into a landmark occasion for India, with a packed Salt Lake Stadium welcoming Carlo Ancelotti’s side for the nations’ first meeting.
The match began at 19:30 local time, 16:00 in Spain, at the 85,000-capacity venue, where India’s players faced a Brazil team led by Vinicius Junior and arriving after an unbeaten two-match trip to Australia.
Brazil took early control of possession, as expected, while India set up deep in their own half and waited for a mistake. Vinicius created the first threatening moment, sending a low delivery into the area that Thapa cleared. Estevao then registered the first attempt on goal, although his finish went wide.
India nevertheless found a brief route forward, winning a corner after the ball came off Marquinhos. For the hosts, the occasion carries significance beyond the early exchanges: Brazil had never previously played India, and Kolkata has embraced the chance to see the visitors’ leading names in person.
Ancelotti’s developing Brazil record
The Kolkata fixture closes Brazil’s recent series of friendlies. The Seleção drew 1-1 with Australia in Townsville before winning 4-2 in Brisbane.
It is Ancelotti’s 20th match in charge since taking over in May last year. Across his first 19 games, Brazil recorded 11 wins, four draws and four defeats, scoring 41 times and conceding 18.
Vinicius is the central attraction for the home crowd, but the evening also offers Ancelotti another opportunity to refine his team’s approach as Brazil continue to build under his management.
