In Milan, where the blue and black of Inter will meet the same colours worn by Club Brugge, Tuesday night offers both sides an early chance to repair their Champions League starts. Neither arrives at San Siro with a point after the opening round, yet both return from the international break encouraged by convincing domestic wins.
Inter were beaten away to Real Madrid in their first European outing and now host Brugge at 21.00, seeking to put their campaign into motion before the group stage begins to tighten. The Belgian visitors were also defeated in their opener, losing to Aston Villa, but come to Italy after a solid result in the Jupiler Pro League.
A familiar face across the pitch
Yann Sommer will be one of the evening’s more unusual figures. The Swiss goalkeeper, an Inter player only months ago, is now set to guard Brugge’s goal in the stadium he recently called home. His return gives the match a personal thread amid a meeting between two clubs whose shirts share the same blue-and-black identity.
Inter coach Cristian Chivu used Saturday’s Serie A match against Parma to manage his squad, with Lautaro Martinez limited to half an hour. The Argentine is expected to return as part of a first-choice selection against the Belgian champions.
There are, however, likely to be two absences through muscular problems: John Stones and Curtis Jones are both expected to miss out.
Spanish presence in Milan
Two Spanish players are expected to start. Josep Martinez should take his place in the Inter goal, while Jan Virgili is due to begin on Brugge’s left wing. Their roles add another cross-border detail to a contest shaped by recent movement between clubs, contrasting domestic calendars and a shared need to respond after opening-night defeats.
