Hakan Calhanoglu’s future at Inter is beginning to sit alongside a more immediate concern: his availability. The Turkish midfielder remains the reference point in the centre of the side when fit, but with his contract due to expire on 30 June 2027 and no renewal talks yet under way, the club will eventually have to weigh his importance against a growing injury record.
A key figure, with an unsettled contract picture
Calhanoglu has one more season on his present Inter deal, with roughly nine months separating him from its conclusion. Neither an extension nor a departure has been ruled out, but the matter has not yet moved into detailed discussions.
Speaking in Perth at the start of August, Calhanoglu made clear that the next step was in the club’s hands. “My future does not depend on me, but on the club,” he said, adding that there had been no contact over a new agreement. Nearly two months later, that situation remains unchanged.
There is no immediate deadline for Inter to resolve the issue, and the conversation may be left until later in the season. By then, the evidence from the pitch — including the frequency and impact of any absences — will shape the decision for both player and club.
- Calhanoglu joined Inter from Milan in 2021.
- His current contract runs until 30 June 2027.
- No renewal negotiations had taken place in early August, and there has been no change since.
- He has won eight trophies with Inter and hopes to add to that total by June.
Injuries remain the central variable
Across six seasons at Inter, Calhanoglu has missed 38 matches through different physical problems — the equivalent of a full league campaign. That total now includes the last two fixtures he has missed while recovering from discomfort in the adductor of his right thigh.
For Cristian Chivu, the midfielder remains difficult to replace. Piotr Zielinski is an established alternative in the deeper midfield role, while Petar Sucic and Aleksandar Stankovic represent younger options for the future. Yet Calhanoglu’s absence is still felt: no coach has displaced him from the role as consistently as injury has.
The season had opened brightly for him. He started against Monza and Cagliari, scoring in both matches; his goal against Cagliari decided a 1-0 win. Against Napoli, he entered with around 20 minutes remaining to help restore control, only to witness Inter’s ThuLa pairing drive the comeback through the goals for 2-2 and 3-2.
He has not appeared since. Inter nevertheless remained unbeaten through the matches against Udinese and Roma and reached the early turn of the campaign at the top of the table. Those results have protected the team’s position, but they have not removed the question raised by Calhanoglu’s early physical setback.
The season will decide the next chapter
Calhanoglu still sees several playing years ahead of him. The Harley-Davidson he hopes to buy again belongs to a more distant, post-football future. For now, the issue is whether he can offer Inter the continuity expected from their midfield conductor during the final year of his contract.
If the two sides eventually part without a transfer fee, it would echo his arrival from Milan as a free agent. But the defining number for Inter supporters would not be the zero attached to such an exit, nor the 38 matches lost to injury. It would be the trophies already collected, and perhaps those still to come before June.
