Inter Cruise Past Parma as Chivu Rotates Ahead of Bruges Clash

Inter turned a league afternoon into a controlled passage towards Europe, putting Parma away inside 31 minutes and then managing the rest with Tuesday’s Champions League meeting with Bruges at San Siro in mind. The 3-0 win gave Cristian Chivu’s side sole possession of first place overnight, before Roma and Lazio were due to play, while a clean sheet offered reassurance after eight goals conceded in the opening part of the Serie A campaign.

The coach and the club

Chivu made four changes to his starting side, leaving Nicolò Barella, Manuel Akanji, Alessandro Bastoni and Lautaro Martínez out after the international break and ahead of a demanding European schedule. Hakan Çalhanoğlu returned to the team and answered with Inter’s second goal, while Petar Sučić and Marcus Thuram completed the scoring.

For Parma, Alberto Gilardino’s first period in charge after replacing Carlos Cuesta brought no immediate change in fortune. The visitors arrived in Milan intending to build possession from the back, beginning with a four-man structure and looking to bring El Bilal Touré into play. Inter’s technical and strategic superiority soon made those intentions difficult to sustain.

The opening goal came from a costly mistake close to Parma’s own goal. Goalkeeper Edoardo Corvi played towards Mandela Keita, but Sučić pressed, won the ball and finished without difficulty. It was the kind of error from short distribution that immediately changes the afternoon, and Parma never recovered their footing.

Inter added a second soon afterwards. Diego Carlos brought down Pio Esposito in the area, with the penalty awarded after the referee was sent to the monitor following VAR intervention. Çalhanoğlu converted, maintaining an exceptional record from the spot: 56 successful penalties from 63 in his career.

The third goal ended the contest before the interval. Parma attempted to respond from two goals down, only for Inter to break with speed. Henrikh Mkhitaryan combined with Pio Esposito around the halfway line before releasing Thuram, who ran into space and drove a precise diagonal finish beyond Corvi.

A match settled before half-time

At 3-0 after 31 minutes, Inter had earned the right to reduce the tempo. Josep Martínez preserved the shut-out, an important detail for a team whose defensive record had been a concern despite its strong league position.

The second half belonged largely to Inter’s possession and patient combinations rather than further goals. Pio Esposito did not score, but he remained central to the home side’s work, contributing selflessly and producing one ambitious switch of play more commonly associated with a playmaker.

Gilardino introduced Romero, who had unexpectedly begun on the bench. The forward came close twice, but sent both attempts wide. The Parma coach also gave minutes to young forward Lontani, using him as a midfielder in an experiment that may yet be revisited.

Chivu used the margin to look further into his squad. Aleksandar Stanković was given around half an hour, while Djed Spence made his first appearance and played more than 15 minutes. Stanković showed useful physical presence and an understanding of the role in midfield, while Spence displayed the pace that can carry him down the flank, even if one defensive moment showed room for greater decisiveness.

Bruges is the next measure

Inter’s afternoon was efficient rather than extravagant: a decisive first half, then energy conserved for the Champions League. Bruges should offer a more demanding examination on Tuesday, but the Parma match showed again what Chivu’s side can do when it imposes itself early and turns superiority into a result before the contest has time to develop.
