Inter Milan Icon Sandro Mazzola Dies Aged 83

Milan is mourning one of the figures who gave Inter its European stature. Sandro Mazzola, the forward who spent his entire playing life in the Nerazzurri shirt, has died at the age of 83.

Inter confirmed the death through its social-media channels, paying tribute to a player regarded among the defining idols in the club’s history. Mazzola’s name remains closely tied to the side that carried Italian football to the summit of Europe during the 1960s.

From Turin roots to Inter greatness

  1. Mazzola was born in Turin on 8 November 1942, while his father, Valentino Mazzola, was playing for Torino.
  2. At six years old, Sandro lost his father in the Superga air disaster, which killed Torino’s entire travelling party as it returned from a friendly match against Benfica in Lisbon.
  3. Though his family connection was deeply rooted in Torino, Mazzola chose Inter and never represented another club during his career.
  4. He helped Inter win four Italian league championships: 1962-63, 1964-65, 1965-66 and 1970-71.
  5. He was also central to Inter’s consecutive European Cup triumphs in 1963-64 and 1964-65.

A decisive night against Real Madrid

The first of those continental titles came with Mazzola at the heart of the occasion. He scored twice as Inter defeated Real Madrid 3-1 in the final, a performance that secured the European Cup and helped define an era for the Milan club.

His career therefore linked two of Italian football’s most enduring stories: the loss of Torino’s celebrated generation and the rise of Inter as a force across the continent. For Inter, Mazzola was more than a decorated forward; he was a lasting symbol of its greatest European years.
